:(

Smoochie died rather abruptly a few days ago, I will miss her always resting her head in my lap looking for a rub. And I want to give Oreo a giant unending hug because she no longer has a companion to spend her days with, and that - that being left behind- is never easy.

Natural Historie

LOVE the jewelery over at Natural Historie. Especially the nautical charm bracelet, it's so perfectly whimsy... Love it (and want it)!!

Ontogeny, examined.

I love swings, I think it's the way my feet feel traveling through the air, the way the wind feels on my face, it feels... uplifting. As I sat on the swings near my apartment today, I was reminded of how I used to sit on the creaky seesaw-swing hybrid in our sideyard, singing songs and talking to myself in the warm afternoon heat. And I wonder if we can cultivate solitude, if it is something I nurtured, something I chose to keep company with, because even in the vague recollections of my everyday childhood, I remember feeling alone. And maybe that's where it began, in the seeds of my childhood, in my imaginary friends and the voices I gave them, in warm afternoons on swings.

I feel that retail itch.

After walking around a little today (no black friday crowding, just mid-afternoon strolling), I want these peacock earrings, this hoodie dress in cranberry, another one of these bandeau dresses in eggplant, and finally, these cableknit tights. (Paycheck soon! wheeeee.)

turkey day part II

Turkey dinner comprised of some leftovers, perfect roast potatoes, spiced couscous and brussel sprouts (mmmm!). And then some baked banana-mango bread with surprise choc-chips, which turned out really nice and moist (ugh, I hate that word) on the inside and so crispy on the outside. yums.

Turkey day.

Thanksgiving consisted of an early morning (surprisingly uncranky) walk to Indian Rock. The weather was nice, the sun was out enough to warm and the clouds were out enough to shade. Sat at the top for about an hour, wrote a little, thought alot. 'Twas a good way to start the day.

Holiday season is here!

So, I am definitely a christmas lover, especially those spent in toasty homes (with fireplaces!), with yummylicious food (pies, potatoes, cookies, ham, hot apple cider...mmm!), lovely friendly people, thick warm sockettes, limbless snowmen, and lots and lots and lots of snow.

And let's not forget presents. I'm making most of mine this year (considering poor grad student budget) for the lovelies, but here are some oh-so-cute things that are tres lovely.

1. Lululemon eco align ultra mat, because it's so perfect for yoga lovers! (esp in the yellow/teal colour)
2. Ear warmer headphones, because they're perfect for music-listening during those crazy windy winters.
3. Gap tiered ruffle dress, because everyone needs a cute, ruffly little black dress for the holidays.
4. Maroon chucks, because I had a pair of maroon chucks for years which I had on all the time (even on cold winter days) until I wore holes into the sides of them, and had to throw them out which made me really sad. And then, these! Ahh!
5. Ipod Nano, because it's 2000 songs, 9 colours, tiny on-the-go, mmmm.
6. Kimchi Blue lace back dress, because it's pretty.
7. AE duffle coat, because it'll keep you cute and warm.
8. Dressage saddle bag, because it's SO CUTE I don't have words for it.
9. Anthropologie embroidered amaranth bag, because eveyone needs a bright bag, and it's on sale!
10. Jocasi lockhart bag, because it is lovely (if only I weren't so poor).
11. AE sweater mary-janes. because they'll keep your feet toasty whilst prancing around the house.
12. Hayden-Harnett hopeland wallet. because Hayden Harnett is awesome.
13. Kimchi Blue dandy plaid pitchfork, because it's got a hilarious name, and because everyone needs a little plaid.
14. AE fairisle trapper, because warm ears make happy people.
15. Anthropologie star rock clutch, because it's such a cute whimsy evening clutch!

Have fun shopping and giving!

Backdate: Jason Mraz & Ray LaMontagne

'Twas a brilliant Sunday: brunch at La Note and Jason Mraz in the afternoon. The Greek Theatre is beautiful, the perfect venue for an overcast afternoon concert outdoors. Lisa Hannigan opened, and she is still as brilliant as the last time I saw her with Damien Rice.

Ray LaMontagne was so amazing, for lack of a better word. Leona Nass opened and she is really cute and very awesome to boot. Ray LaMontagne is probably my favourite musician I've ever watched perform, strangely because he is not a performer- the lights are always dim, he barely speaks between songs. And this is so lovely, simply because at the end of it all, he brings you back to the music, which is the point of everything really. Right now, playing "Winter birds", "Henry nearly killed me", "Falling through" and "You are the best thing"on repeat. Love!

Backdate: Steve's month in Berkeley

So the boy spent most of October here, and there was tons of time spent in the kitchen, on the couch, and galavanting around Berkeley and San Francisco traipsing through Farmer's markets and cute little neighbourhoods.

For Halloween, we broke out the knives and embarked on a pumpkin carving adventure (my first to be precise), and the product was Jean-Pierre the pumpkin (who was very angry about the hearts on his head), who is now decomposing somewhere in a garbage heap.

We made some ravioli from scratch (twice!). For firsts, pasta is definitely the hardest thing I've ever made (especially without a rolling pin). The dough was way too thick and our ravioli hearts were huge and really chewy. We stuffed the ravioli with mashed sweet potatoes and grated parmesan cheese, boiled and then baked with a homemade basil parsley "pesto". Yumm. The second time, we made them from wanton wrappers, stuffed with mashed potatoes, making some sort of crispy yummylicious ravioli/gnocchi hybrid.

Baking endeavours included two batches of molten lava cakes (the first one plain, the second with bananas!) which were rich and so bite-sized, and sugar cookies (we dipped the round ones in some chocolate melting in a hot water bath, which was SO good).

The boy's last saturday morning was spent writing the (wretched!) GRE. And we met in San Francisco, where it was pouring rain for most of the day (and my favourite mocassins were soaked through, though I did score a pair of sweet rainboots). We walked around the marketplace and the awesome farmer's market at the Ferry Building, where the produce and food is fresh, local, sustainable and oh-so-tasty looking.

And now, just looking forward to the end of the semester, and being able to board a plane to snowy toronto for a month of uninterrupted goodness with the boy and my much-missed lovelies.

Picture Update!

Clockwise from top left:
  1. The hugest pumpkin I've ever seen at Berkeley Bowl.
  2. Spice of Life Festival through the Gourmet Ghetto, where we got yummy organic 'milk and cookies' ice cream and my much-awaited Built lunchbag.
  3. Yummylicious brunch at Bette's Oceanview Diner on Fourth Street, where the wait is totally worthwhile just for some perfectly-crispy-and-soft-at-the-same-time toast.
  4. Way too many indulgent ice cream/froyo trips including Tara's Organic Ice Cream (deliciously odd strawberry balsamic!), Ici (yummy Earl Grey and Honey Chamomile), Sketch (creamy vanilla bean) AND lots of Yogurt Park (where york peppermint chocolate is the bomb).
  5. A huge range of cool stuff at Maison d'Etre
  6. Halloween cupcakes from Virginia Bakery!

Lazy Sundays

shutter sisters

The day consisted of:

1 trip to Thai brunch with the housemate
2 yummilicious cold rolls, snacked on later
1 paper read
1 much-needed phone call from the lovelylovely, cheer-inducing Aileen
1 loaf of banana mango bread, that fell apart but still smells SO good
1 tripod headstand
1 video of an ingenious ninja cat

And finally, some word from you. And really, I think we will be okay.

Weekends

Clingstone

I think I have found my perfect home. And I've decided that my perfect life will be spent in an old house with wooden floorboards, lots of windows and a vast kitchen, someplace where the ocean is so close I could dip my toes in it in the mornings.

It is drizzling outside and I've left my windows open so the smell of the rain can seep in, the upstairs neighbours are playing an array of good and bad music much too loudly through the celing, and I am falling asleep to the sound of Foy Vance's Billie Jean.

Yoga bright and early tomorrow morning.

Embroidered text messages

I've had the hugest headache all day long. And as a result, most of the day was spent curled up under the covers watching reruns and pondering most everything (and in general, not being productive at all).

And I find myself refreshing my mailbox every 15 minutes; I think I am waiting to hear from you. And I want to send you that draft I wrote last night, the one that tells you that I miss you, that I don't know if you're disappointed or angry or sad or just ambivalent now, that I don't know if you haven't replied because you're not speaking to me or because you've just got too much to do right now, that I don't know if I've fucked it up and that I am paranoid and panicked and anxious, but most of all, and simplest of all, that I love you.

you.

In between monday afternoon writing and frozen peppermint yogurt in the evening, I am haunted by the thought that we are breaking. Are we? And I wish that this would be easier, that you would be nearer, that I would try harder, that we could be closer, that this distance we live with could be more -- temporary.
